Midjourney 5.1 Brings New Changes to AI Image Creation
Midjourney, the popular online service that allows users to create images using generative artificial intelligence, has released a new version that promises significant changes in the quality and style of images. Midjourney 5.1, released on May 3, features improved accuracy, fewer unwanted borders or text artifacts, and improved color and contrast. The service also offers a “raw” mode for more realistic photographic results and a “default” mode for more artistic and fantasy results.
The announcement came from their official Twitter handle which said the following:
According to Midjourney CEO David Holz, Midjourney 5.1 is “more opinionated” than the previous version, providing a stronger artistic touch and a flair for the dramatic. This makes it closer to Midjourney 4, which received widespread praise for its creative and diverse outputs but now with a higher resolution and sharpness.
Users have reported that Midjourney 5.1 produces more interesting and dynamic images, particularly for those new to AI art or who prefer less specific prompts. The update is available in open beta testing, and users can activate it in the /Settings section of the Discord chatbot.
While MidJourney has undergone constant updates and improvements since its launch in 2020, it is now facing competition in the AI image space. Both Google and Microsoft are looking at different ways to take space within the AI-image creating space.
Google’s CEO said as much during an interview with 60 Minutes:
What’s interesting is Microsoft’s approach with Bing. The Bing Image Creator can create images based on simple words or phrases, such as animals, objects, landscapes, or abstract concepts. However, the tool also has some limitations and restrictions. While Bing Image Creator is more focused on crafting images for users, it is not yet as capable as Midjourney, especially version 5.1.
As AI image creation becomes more mainstream, Midjourney’s latest release promises to offer even more creative possibilities to users. The AI-powered image generation tool continues to evolve, allowing users to create unique and dynamic images that challenge traditional notions of art. Though there has been pushback from the art community, it hasn’t stopped the tool from gaining popularity.
Currently, Midjourney 5.1 is only available to paid users after the service applied a block to prevent misuse of its tool.
