Read about the research groups at CDS working to advance data science and machine learning!

CDS includes a range of research groups that bring together NYU professors, faculty fellows, and PhD students working at various intersections of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. From Minds, Brains, and Machines to MaD these cohorts of data science researchers strive to forward models and research in the growing field of AI. Read our research group roundup below and check out their linked websites for more information!

MaD & MaD+

The Math and Data (MaD) group is a collaboration between CDS and the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The group was first launched in 2016 by Associate Professor of Computer Science, Data Science and Mathematics Joan Bruna, and Associate Professor of Mathematics and Data Science and incoming CDS Interim Director Carlos Fernandez-Granda with the goal of advancing the mathematical and statistical foundations of data science. Their work specializes in signal processing and inverse problems, machine learning and deep learning, and high-dimensional statistics and probability.

NYU Minds, Brains, and Machines

NYU Minds, Brains, and Machines focuses on research and educational opportunities around the challenge of understanding intelligence from an interdisciplinary standpoint. The initiative strives to answer two central questions: “How can advances in machine intelligence best advance our understanding of natural (human and animal) intelligence? And how can we best use insights from natural intelligence to develop new, more powerful machine intelligence technologies that more fruitfully interact with us?”

ML²

The Machine Learning for Language (ML²) group works on machine learning methods for natural language processing (NLP) through developing cutting-edge models and engaging in research. The group is associated with the larger CILVR Lab.

CILVR Lab

The CILVR Lab (Computational Intelligence, Learning, Vision, and Robotics) was founded by CDS Faculty & Founding Director and Chief AI Scientist at Meta’s AI lab Yann LeCun and CDS Associated Professor Rob Fergus in 2009. The group works on machine learning in a broad range of applications, predominately in computer perception, natural language understanding, robotics, and healthcare.

STAT

The STAT group (Statistics: Tools, Algorithms, and Theory) seeks to advance statistical applications in data science and machine learning. They focus on developing new methodological, computational, and mathematical approaches to statistical problems. The group works closely with researchers across CDS and NYU Courant. Currently, they are focused on expanding their work in applied and theoretical statistics along with interdisciplinary areas.
