Amazon has claimed a greater stake in the AI race with a new $4 billion investment into AI startup Anthropic. This is the latest high-level investment by a tech giant in recent months as more and more established companies look to AI to deliver new economic opportunities.

According to a report on MSN.com, Amazon will be taking a minority stake in Anthropic, as described in a joint statement from the two companies. Anthropic is aiming to run the majority of its workflows on Amazon Web Services, or AWS, and with that news, AWS has become the startup’s primary cloud provider.

The statement also mentions that Anthropic plans on using AWS’s Triennium and Inferential AI chips to create its foundation models. Part of the deal will also see Anthropic make a long-term commitment to provide global AWS customers with access to future iterations of its foundation models through the Amazon Bedrock service.

There Amazon developers and engineers will be able to develop and build with the Anthropic models through the service to incorporate generative AI capacities into their work. As many know, the race to incorporate more generative AI tools into platforms has only grown in intensity over the last year.

In a statement, Amazon Chief Executive Andy Jassy said, “We have tremendous respect for Anthropic’s team and foundation models, and believe we can help improve many customer experiences, short and long-term, through our deeper collaboration.”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei followed up with his investment statement, “By significantly expanding our partnership, we can unlock new possibilities for organizations of all sizes, as they deploy Anthropic’s safe, state-of-the-art AI systems together with AWS’s leading cloud technology.”

Finally, as part of Amazon Bedrock, customers will be receiving help from Anthropic’s Claude and Claude 2 AI chatbots as part of the new partnership. Amazon’s push into generative AI has grown in recent months as the company announced a preview of new AI capabilities for its Echo devices.

But it’s not just Amazon making moves. The investment from Amazon is only the second in recent months as Anthropic signed a $100 million deal with a South Korean telecom firm to develop a domain-specific LLM.
