In a report by The Guardian, Romania’s Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca appointed an AI by the name of “Ion” as an honorary adviser on artificial intelligence. This is a first of its kind in the political world that is gripping with how to deal with the emerging technology as it scales on multiple fronts. For the Romanian PM, this move is part of the government’s efforts to bolster its expertise in AI and emerging technologies.

Interestingly enough, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca sees artificial intelligence as a tool. In a quote about the technology he said, “I have the conviction that the use of AI should not be an option but an obligation to make better-informed decisions,”. Romania isn’t the first nation to recognize the importance of AI. Though many are taking different approaches, such as China, the EU, and the United States, it’s clear that there are discussions being held about AI at top levels of government.

But what does Ion actually do? Well according to the report, its main function is to scan social media networks and inform the government “in real time of Romanian’s proposals and wishes,” according to Ciuca. The way this works is Ion will collect, organize, and process the submissions that it’s provided. From there, it will summarize different varieties of requests and questions and then measure how widespread the topic is. All of this will give the AI the ability to measure how passionate people are about a given topic.

The project that created Ion is being overseen by Romania’s Research and Innovation Ministry with a goal of not only increasing public discourse on issues but also driving economic innovation for the nation. Ciuca emphasized the importance of AI in driving economic growth and improving public services, stating that “Romania has the potential to become a leader in AI, and we are committed to fostering an environment that supports innovation and entrepreneurship in this field.”

2023 has become another big year for artificial intelligence. In January, the U.S. House of Representatives read a speech created using ChatGPT. The goal of which, much like what Prime Minster Ciuca is attempting, is to point out the coming impact of AI. Overall, this couldn’t have come at a better time for technology and society as a whole. That’s because AI is currently transforming industries and various aspects of society.

In Romania at least, they are aiming to leverage the expertise of Ion AI to optimize the management of their political state.
