OpenAI Delivers Summary of GPT-4’s Abilities
OpenAI has announced that GPT-4 is currently in development, and while there are no official release dates, there is plenty of excitement surrounding what this latest iteration of the GPT series may be capable of. Currently, it will be made available to ChatGPT Plus users and as an API for developers to build applications and services according to OpenAI’s announcement.
What’s interesting is that GPT-4 will be a multi-model. That means it will be working with text, images, and video. One use case example of this is their work with the app Be My Eyes. This app assists though who are blind or suffer from low vision. With GPT-4, they began to develop a virtual volunteer within the app which can generate the same level of content and understanding as human volunteers who help with daily tasks.
When it comes to education, OpenAI is hoping to use the power of artificial intelligence to enhance opportunities and provide learners with new avenues to pick up skills. This is seen with two partnerships, Duolingo, and Khan Academy.
Because GPT-4 will now be able to work in multiple languages and translate between them the popular language learning app saw an opportunity. Duolingo is using GPT-4 to enhance its offering for those wishing to learn a new language with two new features: Role play and an AI conversation Partner that works with the learner to help them understand why they made a mistake.
Then there is the popular free learning platform, Khan Academy. In their case, Khan Academy will use GPT-4 for an AI-powered assistant that both acts as a virtual tutor and a classroom assistant for educators. Called Khanmigo, and it’s currently still being tested with a waiting list that is open to the public.
Kristen DiCerbo, Chief Learning Officer of Khan Academy stated of the partnership and GPT-4’s impact on education, “We think GPT-4 is opening up new frontiers in education. A lot of people have dreamed about this kind of technology for a long time. It’s transformative and we plan to proceed responsibly with testing to explore if it can be used effectively for learning and teaching.”
Another highlight of their launch was a focus on improving generative functionality for coding use cases. The impact of this on professional coders could be quite significant since ChatGPT has already become widely used within the space as an assistant of sorts. This is likely why OpenAI quickly pointed to GPT-4’s ability to quickly integrate and deploy into businesses existing internal apps and customer-facing products.
From these examples and more, it’s clear that OpenAI is focused on building a partnership ecosystem on their GPT-4 platform. The diverse array of organizations and programs makes it clear that they are looking to utilize advanced NLP models in multiple facets of society and industries. In short, GPT-4 could be used in a wide range of applications, from chatbots and automated customer service systems to content creation and news writing.
But, GPT-4 still has many known limitations that they are working to address. Some of these include, “social biases, hallucinations, and adversarial prompts.” OpenAI sees that expanding functionality also comes with responsibility and their team is also focused on ensuring that GPT-4, like its predecessors, keeps responsible AI in focus.
